Hawarden Independent January 20, 1944

Phillip Treiber of Ireton, who formerly lived in the Hawarden vicinity, passed away at 5:20 Wednesday morning at the Akron hospital from a heart ailment. Mr. Treiber had been in poor health for the past three years, but was critically ill only about three weeks. He was removed to the Akron hospital last Friday.

Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran church at Ireton at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. H.W. Krieger, the pastor, and the Rev. C.A. Burkhart of Hawarden will officiate. Burial will be in the cemetery at Ireton.

Phillip Treiber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Treiber, was born in Germany April 9, 1877, and so would have been 67 years of age had he lived until next April. He came to America with his parents when he was six years of age, locating to Illinois. Later they moved to Plymouth county and then to Sioux county, living at Rock Valley. In 1902, he went to Morris, Minn., where on December 1, 1904, he was married to Marie Elizabeth Schmidt.

For ten years following his marriage he lived in Minnesota. In 1914 he came to Hawarden and lived on a farm east of town and later northeast of Hawarden. A number of years ago he moved to a farm near Ireton. Two years ago he retired and since then he lived in Ireton.

His mother died in 1899, leaving a number of small children, and his father died in 1904. Following the death of his parents, he together with his sister, the late Mrs. Carl Klumb, assumed the responsibility of looking after the younger members of the family. He was the father of four children, one of whom, Emma Louise passed away February 2, 1907.

Mr. Treiber is survived by his wife and three children. They are, Mrs. Howard Toft of Alcester, Elmer Treiber of Akron and Mrs. Eldo Keiser, who at present is at home, as her husband Lt. Keiser, is overseas. He also leaves four brothers and one sister, John and George Treiber and Mrs. Louis Wegner of Hawarden and William and Peter Treiber of Ireton. One brother, Martin Treiber, and one sister, Mrs. Carl Klumb, preceded him in death. There are nine grandchildren.
