Dorothy Marie Sonichsen, 85, of Yankton, S.D. died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2pm Saturday, March 28, the United Church of Christ with Rev. Nelson officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 8pm. Friday at the (unsure of name) ???ay-Lane Funeral Chapel of Yankton.

Pallbearers were J.D. O'Grady, Doug Marquardt, Tom Sonichsen, Jerry Frick, Marty Raab and Charles Bender.

Dorothy was born March 21, 1913, in Hawarden, to Theodore and Margaret (Jacobs) Schiefen. She attended the Hawarden Public School and in 1931 graduated from Hawarden High School. She continued her education in Des Moines, where in 1934, she received a degree as a Registered Nurse. After school she worked for one year at the Broadlawns General Hospital in Des Moines. She then moved to Hawarden in 1936 where she worked at the Hawarden Hospital until 1943.

On December 9, 1943, she married Hilton Sonichsen in Hawarden. In 1944, they moved to Elk Point, SD, where they ran a poultry, cream and feed store until 1949. They then moved to Yankton where she and her husband were in the bar business until 1965. Hilton passed away on January 30, 1976. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Yankton, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and Moose Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son, Jim, of Yankton, SD; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Joe Schiefen, of Hawarden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, and one sister.
