Hawarden Independent April 29, 1943

Born: 2-20-1870

A.C. Somers, father of Dr. H.A. Somers, a resident of Hawarden since last November, passed away at his home here at 11:20 Friday night. Mr. Somers had suffered from a heart ailment for a number of years, but was able to be up and about until a week preceding his death, when he suffered a severe attack to which he sucumbed.

His remains were taken to his old home at Dickens and funeral services were held at the Methodist Church there Monday afternoon, with Rev. W. O Tompkins of Spencer in charge. He was assisted by Rev. Clarence Tompkins of Rock Rapids and Rev. Lewis Runions of Lake Park. Burial was at Dickens.

Archibald C. Somers was born at Perryville, N.Y., Feb. 20, 1870, and so was some past 73 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Clay county with his parents when he was but a year old and his father took a homestead near Dickens. He grew up there and was married to Lottie Jones. To this union were born four children, who, with his wife, survive him. The children are Dr. H.A. Somers of Hawarden; Mrs. P.C. Fingerson of Bliss, Idaho; Don Somers of Fonda, and Corp. Dale Somers, who is stationed in Australia. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. C.E. Smith of Missoula, Mont., and one brother, W.S. Somers of Dickens.

Mr. Somers was a typical pioneer type of man and was highly respected in his community, where he spent over 70 years. He was reared in the Methodist Church and was a charter member of this church at Dickens. During his adult life, he filled practically every office in the church.

After he came to Hawarden last fall, he immediately took a keen interest in the affairs of the Methodist's Church and was a teacher of the men's Bible class. During his brief life in this city he made close friends with those he came in contact.

Mr. Somers was also active in the civic and educational life in the Dickens community. He was one of the organizers of the Farm Bureau in Clay county, served as president of the cooperative elevator for many years was secretary and treasurer of the cooperative creamery, served as township trustee and was a member of the school board for a number of years.
