Hawarden Independent January 25, 1923

Mr. and Mrs. John M. Soeth were called upon last week to mourn the death of their little daughter, Rachael Maxine, who passed away at the Hawarden Hospital at 7:30 last Friday morning after an illness of a week's duration. She was taken with an attack of appendicitis just a week prior to her death and was hurried to the hospital where an operation was preformed in an effort to save her life. She lingered between life and death for two or three days following the operation and then for a time seemed to improve and was able to recognize members of her family, but this improvement was only temporary and she again lapsed into unconsciousness and gradually became weaker until her spirit went forth to answer the beckoning call of his Master. The little body was once brought to Ireton and taken to the home of the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Houlton. On Monday afternoon at 1:30 funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Otto L. Carr, the pastor, who spoke words of comfort to the sorrowing parents; grandparents, relatives and friends who gathered in large numbers at the church. The little form was laid to rest in the Ireton Cemetery.

Rachael Maxine was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Soeth and was 3 years old Dec 11th last. She was a bright, lovable child, the idol of her parents and grandparents, and their grief at her loss is beyond expression. They have the sincere sympathy of all in their sorrow. Mr. Soeth's mother, Mrs. M.L. Soeth of Storm Lake, and sister, Mrs. Koba and baby of Des Moines came to attend the funeral.
