Hawarden Independent Oct. 13, 1938

Born Feb. 1856
Died Oct. 4, 1938

Mrs. J.H. Downing, an early resident of Hawarden, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning October 4th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Pugh, in Tacoma, Washington. Her death was caused by a cerebral hemmorrhage and came very suddely after she had risen from the breakfast table. She did not regain consciousness and died soon after. She had spent the summer in Tacoma but had planned to return to Sioux City this week to spend the winter in the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. A. Waitt.

According to plans announced by her children, the body is to be cremated and the ashes will be sent later to Hawarden for interment in the family burial lot here.

Lucy Munday Downing was born in Brussels, Belguim, in 1856 and would have been 83 years of age next February. She came to America at the age of 10 and the family settled in Cedar Rapids where she was united in marriage with John H. Downing at the age of 17. The family later came to Granville where Mr. Downing was engaged in the grain and lumber business for a number of years and moved to Hawarden about 1892 and made their home here for about seven years during which time Mr. Downing was in the grain business. They moved from here to Kenwood, Iowa, then to Huntley, Minn. and went to Blunt, S. D. about 1901. In 1911 Mr. and Mrs. Downing moved to San Diego Caifornia, where they made their home until Mr. Downing's death about 10 years ago. Since then Mrs. Downing has made her home with her daughters.

She is survived by two son and two daughters. Ed W. Downing of Fort Worth, Texas; Mrs. Frank Pugh of Tacoma, Washington; Mrs. G. A. Waitt and J Hyatt Downing of Sioux City. One son Philip died while the family resided in Hawarden and the eldest daughter, Mrs. John Ahrens, died a few years ago at her home in Sterling Ill. The members of the Downing family were well known to the older residents here as they were active in the business and social life of the community in the '90's. Mrs. Downing was a true home loving woman and the welfare of her children was ever her most ardent wish. She was their first refuge in their sorrows and disappointments and her sympathetic understanding provided support when their courage faltered. Her life was a long and eventful one and many outside the family circle hold her in fond remembrance.
