DEATH OF JOHN DOHERTY

John Doherty, whose death was briefly mentioned in last week's Bee, passed away at his home in Rock Valley, last week Wednesday afternoon [January 9], after a lingering illness with palsy. Mr. Doherty was a man who was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a kind husband and father, an obliging neighbor and a loyal citizen. He was of a kind and generous disposition and a friend of all who knew him.

Mr. Doherty was born in Hanover, N.J., April 15, 1851, and had attained the age of seventy-two years, eight months and twenty-four days. When he was three years of age, his parents moved to Dubuque, Iowa. A few years later they moved to Jackson County, Iowa, where Mr. Doherty grew to manhood. Thirty-six years ago, Mr. Doherty moved to Rock Valley vicinity and settled on a farm northeast of town, where he lived until about six years ago when he moved with his family to Rock Valley where he resided until death claimed him.

Mr. Doherty was united in marriage to Miss Ellen O'Connor Jan. 29, 1877. Three children were born to them. Five years later his wife died. On June 27, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Kate Mullen[i.e., McMullen]. To this union eight children were born. His second wife preceded him in death July 10, 1922.

He leaves to mourn, eight children, Mrs. Mary Walpole, Josie, Irene, Ed., Jack, Mike, Tom, and Will, all of Rock Valley and vicinity; and two brothers, James of Enterprise, Oregon, and William, of Rock Valley, and one sister, Mrs. Thos. O'Mara, of Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church in Rock Valley Friday morning, Jan. 11. Among those from a distance who were at the funeral were, Dan McMullen, Breckenridge, Minn.; Ed McMullen, Kennebec, S.D.; Mrs. Rose O'Connor and son, Kennebec, S.D.; Phil Smith, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Tom Fitzpatrick, Maurice, Iowa.

John Doherty a respected pioneer citizen, died at his home in Rock Valley Jan. 9th. For several years he had been in delicate health and his death was due to phypostatle pneumonia. Mr. Doherty was born in Havana, New York April 15, 1851 and at the demise was 72 years, 8 months and 24 days old. When a child his parents came west and located at Dubuque where they resided for several years. Later they moved to Bellevue, Jackson county, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Ellen O'Conner Jan. 29, 1877. This union was blessed with three children. After five years of pleasant marital relations, death severed the golden cord that bound them together. June 27, 1885 he was married to Miss Kate McMullen. As a result of this union eight children were born, seven of which survive him. He came to Sioux County in the spring of 1888 and located on a farm four miles north of Rock Valley and became one of the substantial and progressive farmers of this community and by frugality and industry he acquired a competency. Six years ago he retired from farm life and moved to town. He was a brefet of his companion July 10, 1922 and since that time, he has continued the home through the aid of his daughters who tenderly ministered to his wants. He was a man of exemplary habits and was respected for his uprightness of character. He leaves nice children, two brothers, James of Enterprise, Ore. and William and one sister, Mrs. Thomas O'Menra of Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held Friday morning Jan. 11 at St. Mary's church conducted by Pastor Rev. John A. O'Rielly in the presence of many neighbors and friends. Interment occured in the Catholic Cemetery south of town. Those in attendance from abroad were, Dan McMullen, Breckinridge, Minn.; Ed McMullen, Kenebec, S.D.; Mrs. Rose Connenn and son, Kenebec, S.D.; Phil Smith Sioux Falls; Tom Linnan and Mr. Fitzpatrick, Maurice. A wide circle of friends of the family extend condolence in their hour of sorrow.
