Memorial services for Elaine E. Lubbers of Colorado Springs were held January 24 at the Gateway United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. David Clark officiated. Graveside services were held January 26, at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sherman, Texas.

Mrs. Lubbers, 59, died January 21 at a local hospital. She was born October 16, 1921, in Orange City. She had been a resident of Colorado Springs for 15 years.
She graduated from Austin College in Sherman in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree, Austin Seminary in Austin, Texas, in 1958 with a master’s degree in Christian education and Western State College in Gunnison in 1967 with a master’s degree in education and sociology.

Mrs. Lubbers was the director of the Youth Services Bureau at the Colorado Springs Police Department. She had previously been director of the CSPD volunteer program, organizer of the First United Methodist Church counseling program, an elementary school teacher for District 11 and director of Christian education for various churches and presbyteries in the Pikes Peak region. She had also been the first woman professor at the Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan.

Mrs. Lubbers was a member of the Gateway United Presbyterian Church and had been a ruling elder. She was a member of the Colorado State Board of Mental Health, Soroptimist International, the National P.E.O. Sorority and the executive committee of the Pikes Peak Health Association.

She is survived by three sons, Clark E. Lubbers of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Paul J. Lubbers of Colorado Springs and Brent D. Lubbers of Princeton, New Jersey; a daughter, Jill, of Greenville, South Carolina; her mother, Mrs. Arie Kanis and a brother, Herman A. Kanis, both of Colorado Springs; a sister, Mrs. Beryl Simmons of Hawaii; and one grandchild.
