From the September 1, 1887 Sioux County Herald:

A Mr. Smith, of Hull, fell dead Wednesday evening. We have no particulars of the case, more than that he was apparently well, had been at work all day, and without giving any intimation that there was anything the matter suddenly dropped dead. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause.

Poster's note: There is an Iowa cemetery record on ancestry.com for Ira H. Smith born about 1834 died August 31, 1887 in Lincoln Township, Sioux County. That record also gives military service as Co. A, 2nd Wis. Inf.

In addition, there is a May 28, 1942 Hull Index newspaper article about the Roster of Soldier Dead which includes "Ira Smith 1832-1887 Co. A, 2nd Wisc. Inf." Since August 31, 1887 was a Wednesday, it seems reasonable to conclude that the Mr. Smith mentioned in this news item was Ira Smith. I have looked for another obituary or more information and have not been able to find it. There is an Ira H. Smith, a married man, living on the NW 1/4, NW 1/4 of Section 8 in Lincoln Township; however, the image is not available to give the wife's name or to show whether there are children.

Given similar cemetery records, Mr. Smith may be buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Hull; however, burial location is not stated in the record on ancestry.com.

If anyone has further information about Mr. Smith, please contact the Sioux County GenWeb coordinator.
