Mrs. M. Rouwenhorst Pioneer County Seat Resident, Passes Away

Mrs. Marinus Rowenhorst (Nee Maggie Mouw) pioneer resident of Orange City, passed on early Saturday, July 27 at Sioux Center where she had made her headquarters for some years at the home of her Daughter, Mrs. Henry De Kraay. She was stricken with a serious illness over five years ago and was confined to bed during that time at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rotier, where she received the best of care.

Mrs. Rowenhorst was born August 3, 1854 in the Netherlands and had reached the age of 91 years 11 months and 27 days. Whe she was 15 years old the family came to the US, settling first in Pennsylvania and coming to Orange city with the early settlers in the 70s. She was married in 1878 to Marinus Rouwenhorst, who proceded her in death 23 years ago. Since that time she has resided with her children.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Stanley Livingston, Honolulu, T. H.; Mrs. R. V. Gunn, East Lansing MI and Mrs. Henry De Kraay, Sioux Center; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Mrs. Albert Manus Kate of Freeport Ill. Died four years ago and two children died in early life.

Mrs. Rouwenhorst was the last member of the pioneer Mouw family to pass on. She was a woman of unbounded energy and devotion to her family determined that her daughters should have the educational advantages denied her in the exigencies of pioneer life. They justified her fatith in them and became highly useful members of their communities as well as devoted mothers in their turn. Mrs. Rouwenhorst was very proud of her grandchildren and interested in their careers.

They are Stanley Livingston of Providence RI; Donald Livingston of New York City; Mrs. W. Wilson Magrieta Livingston of Honolulu; David Livingston of Wellesley, Mass; Maynard Livingston of San Francisco; Albert Manus of Freeport IL; Stanley Gunn east Lansing MI; Mrs. Jack Coolidge Magrieta Gunn; Robert De Kraay of Oceanside CA; Warren De Kraay of Sioux Center. Five grandsons served with distinction in the armed forces.

Albert Manus came to attend his grandmother's funeral. Bob De Kraay unfortunately could
not come due to injuries received in a motor cycle accident three weeks ago, only two days
before his scheduled discharge. He received a broken femur in one leg and dislocation in the other leg, so will be hospitalized for some time, but is getting the best of care.

Services were held Monday at the Henry De Kraay home and Central Reformed church, Sioux Center, with Rev. H. Colenbrander of Orange City officiating. Irwin Mouw, Gene Kuyper, Mrs. Jas. Wandscheer and -.loyce Boeyink, accompanied by Marcella Poppen sang two hymns. Burial was in the Orange City cemetery. Pallbearers were Peter B. Mouw, Ben B. Mouw, Jake Bonnecroy,, Martin Rotier, John H. Mouw, John G. Van Roekel all nephews with the exception of Mr. Rotier .

Mrs. R. V. Gunn arrived Saturday night from East Lansing, and will spend a week with Mrs. De Kraay. Since the death of her husband two years ago she has been employed in the i-library of Michigan State College at East Lansing. After the graveside service conducted by Rev. Colenbrander in the Orange City cemetery, relatives and friends were graciously entertained by the Misses Kit and Etta De Kraay at their home in Orange City.

Mrs. Marinus Rouwenhorst died at Sioux Center July 27 at the Martin Rotier home where she had been cared for. She had been ill for several years. Funeral services were held on Monday July 29, at the home of her daughter Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Kraay, and burial was in the Orange City cemetery. Rev. H. Colenbrander officiated.

Mrs. Rouwenhorst, nee Maggie (Margrieta /Grietje) Mouw was born in the Netherlands, August 3, 1854. When she was 15 years old, the family came to America. They lived first in Pennsylvania, and then came to Orange City with the first settlers. In 1878 she was married to Marinus Rouwenhorst who died 23 years ago. For many years she had made her home in the Henry De Kraay home in Sioux Center.

Surviving are the following children: Mrs. R. V. Gunn of East Lansing, Mich., Mrs. Stanley Livingston of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mrs. De Kraay. Three children died early in life, and one daughter. Mrs. Albert Manus, died at Freeport Ill four years ago. She also leaves several grandchildren. One of them, Albert Manus Jr. of Freeport, came for the funeral. Mrs. Gunn was also here for the services, and will visit her sister, Mrs. De Kraay, for a time.

After the interment, relatives and friends gathered in the home of the Misses Kathryn and Etta De Kraay and George De Kraay here.
