From the February 26, 1885 Sioux County Herald:
Death has again entered our village and taken away Mr. Alfred Fisher. He departed this life on Monday morning at 7 o'clock. Mr. Fisher was unassuming in his manners, yet he was true, to his friends and neighbors. He had suffered for several years with that dreadful disease, consumption, which was the cause of his death. He leaves a sister here in town and her family to mourn his death. Mr. Fisher was a soldier during the rebellion, and there contracted the dreaded disease which finally resulted in his death. He will be buried on Wednesday the 25th, by the G. A. R. post of Ireton.
Poster's note: In researching Mr. Fisher for the Ireton Veterans' project, we found that Mr. Fisher was the son of John and Anna ("Fannie") (probable maiden name: Leslie) Fisher. He, his mother and several siblings were living in Linn County, Iowa when he enlisted in Co. H of the 20th Iowa Infantry on January 14, 1864. He was transferred to Co. K of the 29th Iowa Infantry on February 5, 1864 and was mustered out on August 10, 1865. While in the service, he contracted tuberculosis which eventually led to his death.
After the service, he farmed for several years in Linn County but by the 1880 census was listed as "sickly". At some point between 1880 and 1885, he moved to Ireton to live close to his sister, Irene (Mrs. Philo B.) Warfield. He passed away on February 23, 1885.
