From the December 21, 1922 Hawarden Independent:

Ben Fosburg, one of the pioneer residents of this community, died last Saturday at his home at Siloam Springs, Ark., from infirmities incident to his advanced years. He was past 79 years of age. He suffered a stroke of paralysis on Thanksgiving Day and a second stroke a few days following from which he was unable to rally.

Accompanied by two of his daughters, Mrs. Geo. Dyer of Siloam Springs, and Mrs. Ethel Beadle of Omaha, and their husbands, the remains were brought to Ireton for interment in the family lot in Pleasant Hill cemetery. A son, Arthur Fosburg of Sioux Falls, was also here for the funeral service. The remains reached Craig on the afternoon train Monday and were brought overland to Ireton. Rev. J. A. Kettle, pastor of the M. E. church, conducted brief funeral services at the grave.

Ben Fosburg was one of the very earliest settlers of this community. He homesteaded a short distance northeast of town and continued to own his old homestead until just a few years ago when he sold it. He left the farm and moved to Ireton about seventeen years ago. Twelve years ago he moved to Siloam Springs, Ark., at which place he has since made his home. He had many old friends in this community who admired his sterling integrity and honesty. His wife, now greatly enfeebled, survives him but was too ill to accompany the remains to Ireton. He is also survived by two sons and three daughters, Arthur Fosburg of Sioux Falls, S. D., Will Fosburg of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Will McCall and Mrs. Dyer of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Mrs. Ethel Beadle of Omaha, Neb.

Poster's note: In researching Bennett Fosburg for the Ireton Veteran's project, we found that he was born in February 1843 in Bradford County in northeastern Pennsylvania, the son of Elizabeth (Goodrich) and John Fosburg. He enlisted in Co. K of the 1st New York Light Artillery Battery on September 3, 1864. He married Laura Miller in Pennsylvania about 1866. He was a brother to another Ireton Civil War veteran, Porter Fosburg.

Bennett Fosburg died on December 16, 1922. His widow died just three days later on December 19. Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton.
