From the February 21, 1924 Hawarden Independent:

Horton Carder, father of Mrs. Geo. Campbell and one of the early day residents of Ireton, passed away about 1 o'clock Tuesday mornig at the home of his son, H. W. Carder, at Red Oak, Iowa, following a lingering illness. He was about 84 years of age. Upon being advised of the seriousness of her father's illness, Mrs. Campbell departed Monday evening by way of Hawarden, for Red Oak, but news of his death reached her before she left Hawarden. The remains will be taken to Boone, Iowa, for interment, where his wife, who died twelve or thirteen years ago, is buried.

Horton Carder came to Ireton in 1884 and erected a flour mill here which he operated five or six years. This mill has since been converted into an elevator which is now owned by the Farmers Cooperative Co. After disposing of his mill, Mr. Carder farmed a year or two and then moved to town and conducted the Ireton hotel until about 1896 when he moved away.

He is survived by four daughters and three sons. Mrs. Geo. Campbell of Ireton, Miss Jessie Carder of Loveland, Colo., Mrs. Carl Vander Hamm of Longview, Wash.; Mrs. Inez Gehr of Duluth, Minn.; H. W. and Nelva J. Carder of Red Oak, Iowa, and L.C. Carder of Houston, Texas.

Mr. Carder had many friends among the older residents of Ireton who learned of his death with sincere regret and all join in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

Poster's note: In researching Horton Carder for the Ireton veterans' project, we learned that he was born on May 28, 1840 in Ohio, the son of Fanny and Henry Carder. In the 1925 Iowa census, daughter Harriet (Carder) Campbell gives her mother's maiden name as Margaret Tagart. We found a pension application for Mr. Carder based on service in Co. A of the 6th Iowa Infantry (could be 5th - difficult to read) but have not been able to locate him in any of the Civil War service databases.
