Elsie Mohan, 90, of Hawarden died Tuesday, October 22, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hawarden with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Mohan was born September 2, 1912, in rural Plymouth County to R. H. and Elsiena (Bonnes) Zimmerman. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1929. She also graduated from normal training and taught school in rural Plymouth County from 1930 to 1931. She married Joseph Mohan in Des Moines on September 28, 1931. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri, and Sioux City, and in Maryland during World War II. A few years after the war, they moved to Hawarden, where they made their home for the remainder of their lives. He died July 27, 2001.
She contracted polio in 1952 and was crippled but not handicapped. She worked with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and served as a librarian, teacher's aide and CCD teacher. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary Guild, American Legion Auxiliary and women's clubs.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Joyce and Jim Larsen of Maurice; a son and his wife, J. Patrick and Sue of West Covina, California; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 10 great-stepgrandchildren; a great-great-stepgrandchild; two brothers and their wives, Richard and Doris Zimmerman of Le Mars and George and Trudy Zimmerman of Coronado, California; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by an infant son, two brothers and three sisters, one in infancy.
