Art E. "Smokey" VandePol, age 80, of Watertown, S.D. died April 14, 2003 following an extended illness. Funeral services were April 18 in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown with the Rev. P. James Biswell officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown.

Art VandePol was born March 14, 1923 at Hawarden, the son of Dick and Etta (Eastman) VandePol. He spent his childhood years in Hawarden. On November 20, 1952, he married Ella Mae Bryson at Hawarden. He was employed by Hallet Construction in Hawarden and the couple moved with the company to Watertown. He was later employed by F.J. McLaughlin until his retirement in 1988.

Survivors include; one son, Roger VandePol, of Turton, S.D.; two daughters, Donna VandePol and Vicki Dahl, both of Watertown; one brother, Wayne VandePol of Hawarden; two sisters, Eva Zalme of Ireton and Lucille Huckle, of LeMars; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one infant daughter, and three brothers.
