From the Thursday, October 1, 1914 Hawarden Independent:
DEATH OF MRS. THURTELL
Effort to Prolong Life Through Operation Proves Futile
Mrs. Frank Thurtell died about 7:30 last Thursday evening at the Hawarden hospital after an illness of many weeks from cancer of the liver. In the hope that her life might be prolonged she submitted to a surgical operation on Thursday morning but her strength was not sufficient to rally from the ordeal and the end came the same evening.
Eva St. Clare Minnick was born at Hazel Green, Wis., Nov. 7, 1865, and died in Hawarden Sept. 24, 1914. She was united in marriage to Frank Thurtell at Galena, Ill., Feb. 23,1875. To this union twelve children were born, five of them, one daughter and four sons having preceded their mother into the spirit world. The family moved west to Plymouth county twenty-nine years ago where they resided on a farm for many years. Later they moved to Sioux City and thence to Hawarden where they have made their home for a number of years.
Her aged mother who still survives her was born in Cornwell, England, and her father came from Lebanon county, Pa. She is also survived by her husband, three sons and four daughters, two brothers and three sisters. The children are Mrs. Walter Smith of Kingsley, Iowa, Edward Thurtell of Kansas City, Mo., Anthony Thurtell of Sioux City, Robert Thurtell of Wagner, S.D., Mrs. Will Violett and Misses Eva and Grace Thurtell of this city.
The remains were taken to the old home at Kingsley Saturday and funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. Steele, pastor of the Congregational church at that place. Interment was made in the Kingsley cemetery beside the graves of two of her children. The funeral was largely attended by the old friends and neighbors of the family, many who had left the town returning for the day. Besides members of the immediate family who were in attendance at the funeral were one brother, Will Minnick of East Dubuque, Ill., and three sisters, Miss Ella Minnick of Cuba City, Wis., Mrs. Hiram Chase and Miss Blanche Chase of Thornton, Iowa, and Mrs. Julia Hannum and Miss Mary Hannum of Hurley, S. D. In addition were Mr, and Mrs, M. A. Brien and daughter Mary of LeMars; and Mrs. F. Newkirk, Miss Lulu Newkirk, Mrs. Edens and Miss Hope Ford of Sioux City.
Poster's note: According to numerous family trees on ancestry.com, Eva was the daughter of Eliza (Rogers) and Antonius ("Anthony") Minnick.
