William Hitchcock, son of Horace and Charlotte Hitchcock, was born on Sept. 16, 1852, in Centerville, Indiana county, Pennsylvania, and died in Hawarden Dec. 16, 1931, at the age of 79 years and 3 months. He was the second in a family of seven children, but one of whom, his oldest sister, survives. He had two brothers and four sisters.

He came to Chariton, Iowa, in March, 1876, and from there moved to Bedford, Iowa; and then to Sioux City. He went to Nebraska in the fall, of 1878 but returned to Iowa the next year and located at LeMars. On July 5, 1882, he came to Hawarden and has called this place his home during all of the nearly fifty years which have since elapsed.

On Oct. 27, 1886, he was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Chenhall at the home of her parents near Ireton. A daughter, Olive, was born to them but died when about 16 years of age. After her death Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock took a little boy into their home and raised him. This young man, Robert Williams, now makes his home in Sioux Falls. He is survived by his widow; one sister, Mrs. Ann Melissa Campbell of Indiana, Pa., and several nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania, besides a host of loyal friends who join in extending sympathy to his surviving relatives.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church of this city; Dale Lodge A. F. & A. M. of Hawarden; Columbia Commandery, Knights Templar, of Sioux City, and El Riad Temple of the Shrine, of Sioux Falls.

Mr. Hitchcock was a contractor and builder by profession and erected many of the buildings and homes in Calliope and Hawarden. He was himself a master workman and was a successful overseer of men. Through his long association with Hawarden people he acquired a reputation for strictly square dealing in all his business transactions and fulfilled every requirement of good citizenship. Possessed of a kindly and genial disposition, with an unfailing sense of humor he readily attracted many fast friends who remained loyal and true throughout the passing years.

Poster's note: In the 1925 Iowa census, William Hitchcock gives his parents' names as Charlotte (Flemming) and Horace Hitchcock.
