From the Sioux City Journal (clipping of uncertain date but about July 18, 1954. Date of death marked on the clipping is July 16, 1954, a Friday. This is consistent with her obituary in the Hawarden Independent on July 22, 1954):

Mrs. Bertha J. Gandy, 61, 2222 Nebraska Street, died Friday at the home after a long illness. She had resided here since September 1, 1947.

She was born November 13, 1892, in Ireton, Ia.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church, Rev. Charles Mason will officiate. The Nelson-Berger funeral home has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gandy was married to Ernest E. Gandy November 28, 1917. She was a past president of Bertram post of the American Legion auxiliary in Ireton and of the Sioux County auxiliary of the legion.

She was a member of the First Methodist church and the Monahan post auxiliary here.

Survivors besides the widower include three sons, Melvin of Omaha, Lloyd of Sioux City and Lawrence, Sioux City airbase; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Buck of Sioux City; a sister, Mrs. Fern Johnson of South San Fancisco; three brothers, Arthur Vander Hamm and Elmer, both of Ireton and Clarence of Cuba, Ill., and nine grandchildren.

Poster's note: Bertha (Vander Hamm) Gandy was the daughter of Adeline (Addie) (Chenhall) and William Vander Hamm. (Source: 1925 Iowa census and page 480, "Ireton, A Proud History, 1882-1982"). Although Earnest Gandy's first name is spelled "Ernest" in his obituary and in Mrs. Gandy's obituary, his descendants use "Earnest" as found in his signature on his World War I draft registration card and in census records.
