From the Thursday, May 19, 1927 Hawarden Independent:

John Pereboom Dies Suddenly

This community was shocked Tuesday morning when the report spread that John Pereboom had passed away during the night. The report was only too true, he having been called to the other shore about 10 o'clock Monday night. He had been down town Monday as was his usual custom, talking with acquaintances and friends, going to the post office for his mail. He seemed about as usual although he had told some of his neighbors that he was not feeling just right. He retired about 9 o'clock that evening and when his wife went to the bedroom about an hour later she noticed that something seemed wrong and he made the remark that he was terribly sick. He tried to cough and it was evident that he was a very sick man. His son, Hy Pereboom, was near and raised him into a sitting position. A doctor was hastily called but in a few moments he was beyond earthly help, dying in the arms of his son. He was conscious to the last.

John Pereboom was well and favorably known to most people in this locality, having been a resident of Eagle township for 23 years and a resident of Ireton the past ten years. In all that time he proved himself to be a man of high Christian ideals which he practiced in daily life. He was a devoted husband and father, having raised a large family and by hard work and industry saved enough to live in peace and happiness when age began to labor hard. He not only lived a good life but saw to it that his family was raised in a wholesome atmosphere and all were trained in honesty and uprightness, Mr. Pereboom was always a loyal citizen, proud of his country, and always tried to do his part as a citizen. Those who learned to know him as a neighbor and friend, speak only of the splendid qualities, always willing and ready to lend a helping hand. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, his early training, and all down through manhood until called was in that faith. He will be missed not only by the immediate family but by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

John Pereboom was born at St. Charles, Mo., Sept. 26, 1854, and passed away at Ireton May 16, 1927, at the advanced age of 72 years, 7 months and 21 days. He moved to Mount Olive, Ill., when a child. He was employed there as a farm hand and coal miner. He was married to Gretje De Buhr at Mount Olive in 1881 and the following year they moved to Nokomis, Ill., where he took up farming as an occupation. In 1889 they moved to Morrisonville, III., where they resided for five years. In the spring of 1894 they moved onto the farm in Eagle township which he occupied for 23 years. In 1917 he retired and came to Ireton where he has since lived.

Eleven children were born to this family, ten of whom mourn the death of a devoted father. One daughter died in infancy. The children, together with the widow who survive him, are William of Lahoma, Okla., H. W. and Miss Mary Pereboom of Ireton; Dora Johnson of Enid, Okla.; Garret of Hawarden; Herman of Enid, Okla.; Anna Vosberg of Long Beach, Calif,; Margaret Edwards of Sioux City; Theodore of Chicago; and Andrew of Ireton. He is also survived by four brothers, Andrew of Burke, S. D.; Garret of Springfield, S. D.; Fred of Hazel, S. D.; and Theodore of Chester, S. D.; and two sisters, Mrs. Dora Renken of Wentworth, S. D.; and Mrs. Richard Johnson of LeMars.

The funeral services were held this afternoon from St. Paul's Lutheran church, with his pastor, Rev. J. E. Rich Schmidt, in charge. All his children except his daughter in California were here for the funeral.

Poster's note: According to the 1925 Iowa census, John Pereboom was the son of Trientje (Eckhoff or Ekhoff) and William Pereboom. John's wife, Gretje, was also known as Margaret (see her obituary and tombstone).
