From the September 5, 1929 Ireton Ledger:

W E. SHIMER DIED AT LONG BEACH, CAL.

William E. Shimer, a former resident of Ireton, passed away at his home at Long Beach, Calif., last Friday, August 23. The deceased had been in ill health for some time, suffering from tuberculosis. Mrs. Edgar Satterlee, a daughter of the deceased, who with her husband was visiting with their son in Chicago, received a message of the approaching death of her father, and left immediately for California, but the end came before her arrival.

W, E. Shimer lived in Ireton for a number of years plying his trade as a building contractor; a portion of the time, however, was spent in conducting a restaurant. He left here about (illegible) years ago and located in Waterloo where he resided for about seven years and then went to California to his home at Long Beach where he had since resided. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his death a widow and nine children, Mrs. Edgar Satterlee, Mrs. Minnie Siferlein, Oliver J Shimer, Lila Matson, Lloyd Shimer, and Wilbur Shimer, of Long Beach, and Cal J. Shimer, Clifford J. Shimer and Ralph Shimer of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Poster's note: According to the 1900 Federal Census, William E. Shimer was born in Iowa in 1856, the son of Isaac Shimer. Family trees on ancestry.com give his wife's name as Lydia Antoinette ("Nettie") Wilson. They were married in 1878 according to the 1900 census and were living in Waterloo (Black Hawk county) by that time so the article may have said left Ireton about 30 years ago since they were living in Washington Township, Sioux County in the 1895 Iowa census.
