From the Thursday, November 26, 1965 Hawarden Independent:

John W. Satterlee, Civil War veteran and one of Ireton's grand old men, answered the final roll call at 4:40 Tuesday morning, following an immediate illness of several weeks from which it was known he could not recover. He had been in ill health for the past year or two and failed rapidly during the past few months. He was 85 years of age and his passing leaves but one Civil War veteran still remaining in Ireton.

John Wesley Satterlee was born in Stevenson county, Ill., May 25, 1840, and died Nov. 24, 1925. When a young man he moved to Wisconsin where he remained until his enlistment in the Union army where he served for a year and eight months in General Sherman's command, serving at various times in the 1st, 21st and 23rd Wisconsin Volunteers. He participated in some of the hardest fought battles of the war and received an honorable discharge on July 8, 1865.

Following his discharge from the army he returned to Wisconsin and on Sept. 21, 1865, was united in marriage with Arabella Peebles, who has been his constant companion for more than sixty years.

In 1868 Mr. and Mrs. Satterlee moved to Calhoun county, Iowa, where they remained for a year and a half and then came to Sioux county and settled on a homestead six miles southeast of Ireton. They lived on this homestead for eight years where they endured all the hardships and suffered the privations of pioneer life. They moved from this old homestead onto a farm, four miles south of Ireton, where they lived for fifteen years. Thirty-two years ago, they retired from the farm and moved to Ireton and have ever since continued to make their home here. Mr. Satterlee united with the Baptist church in early manhood but later joined the Methodist church in Ireton.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. His sons will act as pall bearers.

Besides the widow, Mr. Satterlee is survived by nine sons: P. F. Satterlee of Litchville, N. D., Myron Satterlee of Oregon City, Ore.; Julius Satterlee of Paullina, Iowa; L. D., Edgar and Albert Satterlee of Ireton; Clark Satterlee of Palermo, N. D.; Herbert Satterlee of Northwood, Iowa; and Elmer Satterlee of Blue Earth, Minn. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Poster's note: According to the 1925 Iowa census, J.W. Satterlee was the son of Manilus (or Manlius) Satterlee and Harriet DeLap (or Delapp). The names are somewhat illegible on the census and various spellings are given on ancestry.com. Son L.D. was Loren.
