Lawrence Tieden, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Tieden of Eagle township, passed away at the Hawarden Hospital about 1:30 last Friday morning as a result of injuries received on Monday of last week when he jumped from a hay rack which he was using in threshing operations on the Ralph Gregg farm and was impaled on the handle of a pitchfork. He was rushed to the hospital immediately after the accident where he received every possible medical and surgical attention but it was disclosed that he had suffered a ruptured bladder and peritonitis developed. An operation was performed the following day and last Thursday a blood transfusion was resorted to in an effort to save his life, but the infection had spread though out his system and human skill was powerless to save his life. He suffered intensely during the days following the accident until his death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home and at 2:30 at Trinity Lutheran Church in this city with the pastor, Rev. C. A.Burkhart, in charge. The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever in Hawarden, many being present from Ireton and other surrounding communities. Scarcely more than one-third of the friends who gathered to pay respect to the memory of this young man could be accommodated inside the church and a loud speaker system was installed in order that those outside might hear the service. Rev. Burkhart based his sermon on Psalms 119:9; “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way by taking heed thereto according to Thy Word.” Lawrence had realized that he could not survive his injuries and directed some of the arrangements for his funeral, himself selecting the six young men who served as pall bearers, Arthur and Wilbur Heuer, Arthur Busch, Ted and Herman Schiefen and James Squier. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Lawrence Frederick John Tieden was born on the farm of his parents in Eagle township, three miles northeast of Hawarden, May 8, 1916, and departed this life July 29, 1938 at the age of 22 years, 2 months and 21 days. All of his life was spent on the home farm. He was baptized on June 18, 1916 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 29, 1931. He attended the rural school in his home district from which he was graduated in 1930. That fall he enrolled in the Hawarden high school but was not happy in that environment and attended but a few days, preferring to remain on the farm where during the intervening years he had become of invaluable assistance to his father and assumed a large share in the management and operation of the farm. He was a young man of most exemplary habits and outstanding character and integrity and enjoyed the admiration and esteem of countless friends who deeply mourn his death.

Besides his parents to whom his death comes as a crushing blow, he leaves three sisters, Mrs. Hannah Johnson of Hawarden, Mrs. Edwin Meether of Akron, and Miss Etta Tieden of Hawarden. The latter was attending business college in Denver, Colorado, at the time of the fatal accident and did not reach home until several hours after her brother’s death.
