Carrier At Ireton Dies at Age of 87

J. A. Lindenman, 87, who for many years was the Ireton correspondent for the Hawarden Independent, died Tuesday morning of last week at. the Hawarden hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Lindenman, a retired rural mail carrier, were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church in Ireton. Rev. T. M. King officiating. Burial was In Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Mr. Lindenman was born February 15, 1870, in Teufenthal, Switzerland, came to the United States in 1883 and to Sioux county in 1892.

In 1890 he married Elizabeth Pluss who died February 21, 1905. Four children were born to this union. On March 3, 1906, he married Mrs. Rosina Miller, mother of five children and to this union four other children were born.

One of First Carriers

Two nephews, Howard W. and Arnold R. Pluss, also lived in the Lindenman home about 10 years after the death of their mother, Mrs. Fred Pluss, in 1930.

Mr. Lindenman was one of the first rural mail carriers out of Ireton, beginning July 1, 1901. He retired July l, 1933, after 32 years of service. He was state president for four terms and national vice Resident of the Rural Mail Carriers association during which time he interviewed two presidents, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover.

He was Sunday school superintendent of the Methodist church 26 years, the same length of time he served as secretary of the Ireton board of education.

In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Gilbert; a grandson, Robert Cooper, and two stepsons, Oswald and William Miller.

Survivors

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Cecil Cooper and Mrs. Freda Hill of Ireton, Mrs. Ruel Olson of Des Moines and Miss Clara Lindenman of Los Angeles; three sons, Fred and Arthur of San Bernardino, Calif., and Walter of Coos Bay, Ore; two step-daughters. Mrs. Henry Gaede of Sturgeon Lake, Minn., and Mrs. C. Clausen of Roseburg, Ore.; one stepson, John Miller of Madison, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers at the funeral services were Melvin Tarrel, George Rose, Hans Swanson, Elmer Vander Hamm, Glenn McCrory and Richard Herwynen. Marlin Eilts, Sheryl Eilts, Mrs. George Rose and Ronald Gibbons sang two numbers. Mrs. Ervin Johnson was the pianist.

Ore.; Clara Lindenman, Los Angeles: Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Dewayne Osberg and daughter of Des Moines; Mary Lindenman, Sioux City: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Van Es and children, Newkirk; Fred Pluss, Sioux Falls: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Moser, Vermillion; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Yates, Mrs. Kenneth Janssen and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kratochvil, Hawarden: Robert Melton and Mrs. Wm. Pliet, Sioux City: Mr. and Mrs. Hal Vande Water and Mrs. Cora Vande Water, Parker, S. D: Lloyd Vande Water, Craig; Mrs. Henry Poll, Orange City; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Null, Le Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Lehrman and Mrs. Oscar Lehrman, Spencer, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. John Vander Kirk and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Attma, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Calsbeek, Harry Buma and Cecil Van Es of Rock Valley and mail carriers from Cleghorn, Paullina, Akron, and several other towns.

Poster's note: Per her obituary, Rosina Miller Lindenman's maiden name was Sagar. J.A. Lindenman's mother was Elisebeth Pluss and his first wife was Elizabeth (Eliza) Pluss.
