From the Ireton Ledger, probably November 20, 1919:

Grandma Lindenman Died Suddenly Last Sunday

A shock awaited the members of the J.A. Lindenman household Sunday morning, Nov. 16 when Grandma Lindenman was found dead in bed. Grandma had been around as usual the day before, eating her supper and retiring at her accustomed time. Two of her grandchildren, Martha and Clara, slept in another bed in the same room and on Sunday morning they noticed their grandmother had not arisen as usual. They watched the bed to see any movement but all was quiet and finally they arose and went over to her bed, only to see that she was not breathing. They then came downstairs and told their father and soon it was known that she peacefully slept herself from this life into the eternal one without a gasp or a struggle. Her maker had taken her from earthly scenes to the mansions prepared for her in the celestial home.

Elisebeth Lindenman nee Pluss was born in Teufenthal (Canton) Aargau, Switzerland on the 26th May, 1983 (sic) and had obtained the age of 86 years, 5 months and 21 days. She was married to Jacob Lindenman of Fahrwangen in the same canton in the year 1861. Seven children were born to this union; three boys and four girls. Two girls died in infancy.

In the year 1878, they left their native country and came to America to make a home in the land of opportunity, settling near Rockville, Bates County, Missouri. It was in this vicinity another daughter, a girl, 10 years of age, died.

In the spring of 1883, the family moved to Le Mars, Iowa and made that their home until the fall of 1884 when they again moved to their former home in the southland, all except E.A. Lindenman, a son, who remained to make Sioux County his home.

In the month of October, 1891, the husband and father of the household was laid to rest and 2 months later, the widow and 2 children, J.A. and a sister, came to Ireton, Sioux County, Iowa where in 1894, they were again called upon to give up another link in the family, Emma, the 18-year-old daughter, being called by death.

For 28 years, Grandma Lindenman has lived with her son, J.A. Lindenman and family. She was raised in the faith of the Reformed church but in the pastorate of Reverend Grimm of the Lutheran church here, she joined that congregation and was faithful until the last, attending church whenever her health permitted. Those who knew her best were her best friends.

Three children, Mrs. Peter Moser, E.A. and J.A. Lindenman; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Pluss; and many other relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss.

The funeral was held from the house Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 and from the Lutheran church at 2:00, Reverend Rich Schmidt, her pastor in charge, and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery to await the final summons.

The pallbearers who so tenderly carried the remains to its last resting place were all grandsons and nephews of the departed.

"Sleep, mother, sleep, thy toil is o'er,
Sweet be thy rest, So oft needed before;
Well have we loved you, but God loves you more,
And has called you away, to that bright happy shore."

Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Fred Moser, a grandson from Windom, Minn.; Rose Miller from the Methodist hospital, Des Moines; and Mrs. Chris Claussen from Beresford.

Poster's note: The obituary gives a birth date of 1983 (obviously a typo); however, based on her age at death and the Iowa WPA grave records, it appears that she was born in 1833. The marriage year of 1861 appears to be correct because their oldest child, Elise (later Mrs. Peter Moser) was born in 1863. Son E. A. Lindenman mentioned in the obituary was Emil who lived in Ireton for many years before moving to Sioux City to be near his daughter Mary. Emil and his wife, the former Clara Susanna Hamilton are both buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Son J.A. (Jacob) also lived in Ireton and died on December 31, 1957. His first wife, the former Elizabeth (Eliza) Pluss, died in 1905 and is buried at Pleasant Hill. Jake and his 2nd wife, the former Rosina (Rose) (Sagar) Miller, are also buried at Pleasant Hill.
