AGED HAWARDEN WOMAN IS DEAD

Mrs. Margaret Southwick, 75, a resident of Hawarden more than 30 years, passed away at her home shortly after midnight Sunday morning. She had been in failing health for some time and last Wednesday morning she suffered a stroke from which she did not rally.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church in Hawarden at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning, with Rev. Fr. R. Graf in charge. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery. Margaret McElhaney, was born at Shesburge, Wis., May 27, 1871, and came to Iowa with her parents when a small girl. They made the trip from Wisconsin to Iowa in a covered wagon and settled on a farm near Le Mars. She attended a rural school near Le Mars and was graduated from Le Mars High school. She taught school four years.

Following the death of her mother, she took over the household duties in the home for her father and looked after the younger members in the family. She was united in marriage with Seward Southwick on February 6, 1901. To this union were born four children. One child passed away in infancy. She was the last member of a family of ten. Her husband preceded her in death in 1932. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Vesta Nirene Bajula of Brainerd, Minn., ,who was with her mother the past four years, and Mrs. Mary Irene Booth of Fairview, S. D., one son, Cletus Southwick of Hawarden; one grandson, Raymond McCarthy, who at the present is in Germany, and one great granddaughter.

Mrs. Southwick was highly respected by all who knew her, having devoted her time so faithfully to her home, her family and her church.

Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Booth of Fairview, Mr. and Mrs. Odean Olson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Ferrell, John Ferrell and son, George Ferrell, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Labor, of Slayton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Thos. McCarthy of Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson of Hudson, and Mr. and Mrs. John Ferrell, Jr., and family of Balaton, Minn.
