Clara Mae South

Mrs. Clara Mae South, age 83, of Hull, passed away Thursday, June 22, at Marian Health Center in Sioux City.

Clara Mae was born Feb. 22, 1906, in Ottawa County, Michigan, the daughter of Henry Yntema and Clara Boon Yntema. She was baptized and made confession of her faith at the Reformed Church in Forest Grove, Mich.

She attended Hope College in Holland, Mich., and graduated from the Normal Teachers School in Kalamazoo, Mich. She then taught school for a year in Michigan.

On Oct. 23, 1925, she married Harold A. South of Forest Grove. In 1931, they moved from Michigan to northern Minnesota, where they farmed for 46 years at Goodridge. In 1978, they retired to Hull.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hull and the church's Helping Hands Circle. In earlier times at the Goodridge Lutheran Church, she was Sunday School superintendent and church organist for many years.

She also gave piano lessons for several years.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Aleta, and her husband, Joseph Ulring, of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Janet Christian of St. Paul, Minn.; April Larson of Rochester, Minn.; Beth Russell of Janesville, Wis.; James Ulring of Sioux City; Scott Ulring of Minneapolis, Minn.; and 8 great-grandchildren, Erin, James and Kirsten Russell; Amy, Katie, and Benjamin Larson; and Brian and Anne Christianson.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Birkedal and the Rev. April Larson officiating. Interment followed at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. A prayer service was held Friday, June 23, at the Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home in Hull with the Rev. Birkedal and the Rev. Judd Larson officiating.
