Herbert Carl Sotterman

Herbert Carl Sotterman, 92, of Hawarden, formerly of Longwood, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden with the Rev. Dean Shelly and his wife, Donna, officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation was Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home.

Herbert Carl Sotterman was born to Oscar and Charlotte (Larson) Sotterman on Dec. 29, 1906, at Streator, Ill. He grew up in Alton, Ill., after moving there at age of four. His father was a glass blower and he followed into the glass business, working at Owens-Illinois Glass Company. He married Dorothy Marie Burchett on Feb. 7,1943, in Streator. He spent 43 working years with Owens-Illinois, progressing from mail clerk to the head the purchasing dept. Streator's Owens plant, at one time, was the largest glass container manufacturing company in the world. The Sottermans retired to Florida in January of 1968, spending 30 years in their lakeside home. When Mr. Sotterman's health failed, he and Dorothy moved to Hawarden in June of 1998. He has resided at the Hillcrest Health Care Center since that time.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Hawarden; two daughters, Janis Clark, of Winter Park, Fla., and Karin Borchers and husband, Bob, of Hawarden; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew.
