Frances Vander Hamm, 77, of Merrill, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003 at the Plymouth Manor Care in Le Mars. Memorial services were Nov. 18 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with Rev. Larry Fett of Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Frances Lorraine Aspleaf was born Feb. 24, 1926 at Bancroft, Neb. the daughter of Alfe and Myrtle (Floyd) Aspleaf. As a young child, the family moved to Sioux City. Fran attended public schools in Sioux City. Fran was united in Marriage to Paul Vander Hamm on June 26, 1943 in South Sioux City, Nebr. The couple had farmed near Ireton for several years. They later moved to Ireton and had operated Paul and Fran's Cafe and later opened the Ireton Bowling Alley from 1965 to 1972. In 1981, they moved to Glendale, Calif. and in 1991 they moved to St. Joseph, Mo. In 1997, they returned to Iowa, made their home in Merrill.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Vander Hamm of Merrill; a daughter Paulette Wilkins of Merrill; a granddaughter, Toni Ranger of Merrill; three sisters, Alice Va Deer of Sioux City, Esther Porter of Sioux City, Maye Crosby of California; two special nieces, jean Eilts of Ireton and Shirley Stevens of Gualala, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Beverly Gaul of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Franette Marie and Crosley Paul Ranger; three brothers, Floyd, Alvin and Robert Aspleaf; and a sister, Mary Blevins.
