Walter L. Vander Hamm, 81, of Ireton died Sunday, August 7, at a care center in Hawarden.

Services were at 10:30am Wednesday, August 10, at St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Ireton with the Rev. H.H. Schauland officiating. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery.

Vander Hamm was born June 10, 1907, in Ireton. He married Velda Wellnitz March 1, 1933, in Ireton. The couple farmed in the Ireton area until retiring in 1961. He then worked for Lowe Seed Co. for many years. She died January 21, 1976.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and lifetime member of Lutheran Layman's League.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Schipper of Ireton; two sons Donald of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Leland of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sisters, Velda Onken of Bakersfield, California, and Leona De Jager of Orange California; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
