James R. Doyle
May 6, 1905—October 30, 1994

James Raymond Doyle, 89, of Hawarden died Sunday, October 30, at a Sioux City hospital. A memorial service was at Onida Masonic Lodge in Onida, South Dakota, and burial was at Onida Cemetery.

Doyle was born on May 6, 1905, near Danbury, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Barr) Doyle. He was graduated from Onida High School in Onida, South Dakota. He operated his father's dray line for a year and assembled Model Ts before serving in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the USS Wood and later the USS Green, seeing action in the Panama Canal Zone. He was injured in the Navy and discharged in 1930, when he returned to Onida. He operated a gas and bulk gas station and was employed In the post office. On September 7, 1935, he married Helen Brabec. The couple farmed and he also collected scrap metal. They moved to California in 1945 where he worked on the radar of the Carrier Hornet, later working in the power plant of the Naval yard. They returned to Onida, where he operated his scrap metal business and In 1955 became the director of equalization for Sully County and later Stanley County. He became involved in real estate and mutual funds In 1966. The couple retired to Sierra Vista, Arizona in 1975. She preceded him in death, he moved to Hawarden in 1992.

Doyle was a long-time member of the Onida Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies and Shrine Temple.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Dave Nighswonger of Hawarden and Vickie and Randy Hays of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Ben Nighswonger of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Bart and his wife, Holly, Nlghswonger of Council Bluffs and Renee Remillard of Houston; and a great-granddaughter, Sierra Raye Nlghswonger.

He was also preceded In death by two sisters, Helen and Margariete; and two brothers, Clarence B. Doyle and a brother in infancy.
