From the February 10, 1938 Hawarden Independent:

Thomas John Downs, 80, a former resident of this vicinity, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. L. Waite, in Sioux City on Wednesday of last week following an extended illness. His death was the second within three days in the Waite home as on the Sunday previous to his death, Mr. and Mrs. Waite's 5-month-old daughter, Mary Theresa, died in a hospital from an infant ailment. The child was buried on Tuesday of last week.

Thomas John Downs was born at Covington, Ky., Aug. 26,1857. He later came to Sioux county and located in Washington township and was well known to many of the older residents and was highly regarded by those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Waite of Sioux City and Mrs. James O'Meara of Ireton, and two sons, William of Winner, S. D. and Lloyd of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 last Friday morning in St. Boniface Catholic church with Rev. Fr. Albert Limacher in charge. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery in Sioux City.
