Hazel M. Doherty

Hazel M. Doherty, 98, formerly of Alton, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at the Lindenwood Rest Home in Omaha, Neb. where she had resided the last several years.

The former Helen Olson was born June 18,1903, at Hawarden, the daughter of Chris and Helga (Johnson) Olson. Prior to her marriage, she taught school in Alton and Le Mars. Hazel married Murat Doherty on June 10, 1930, at Le Mars. The couple farmed for many years near Maurice before moving to Alton. Her husband Murat died in 1975.
Mrs. Doherty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.

Survivors include two sons: Daniel Doherty and his wife Shirley of Bellevue, Neb. and John Doherty of Alameda, Calif.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Vipond of Alcester, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Howard Olson.

A memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. A private burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alton under the direction of the Feuerstein Funeral Home, Le Mars.

Poster’s Note: Both copies of the obituary we found referred to Hazel M. Doherty as the former Helen Olson; however, since Mrs. Doherty was survived by a sister, Helen Vipond, the reference to Hazel as the former Helen Olson may have been an error by the funeral home.
