Hawarden Independent September 2, 1927

Lambert Vander Esch, aged 7 years, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Vander Esch, residing on the Wm. Metcalf farm, eight miles northeast of Hawarden, received fatal injuries when he was struck by a car driven by George Stoltenberg about 8:30 Monday morning. It was, the first day of school and with other members of the family Lambert was on his way to the school house, about three-fourths of a mile south of the Vander Esch home. Just before Mr. Stoltenberg reached the point where the children were two of them darted across the road in front of the car. Lambert attempted to follow them but was struck by the bumper of the car and knocked down and the wheels passed over one of his legs. He was brought at once to the Hawarden hospital where it was found that his leg was broken between the knee and the hip but there was no evidence of any internal injuries. While the physicians were engaged in setting the fractured leg he suddenly expired and it is believed that his death was the result of shock and the cutting off of blood circulation due to the fracture. He was fully conscious up to the time he reached the hospital out lapsed into unconsciousness upon his arrival there. Mr. Stoltenberg, the driver of the car , is not blamed for the accident.

Lambert was just past seven years of age and his entire life had been spent in Sioux county. Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers and two sisters.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the parents and other members of the family in the tragic death of their son and brother.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Christian Reformed Church in Lebanon, Fourteen miles northeast of Hawarden, and burial was made in Lebanon cemetery.
