From the Hawarden Independent, January 24, 1946:

Early Resident of City is Dead

Mrs. J. H. Brower, wife of an early day Calliope and Hawarden physician, passed away in a hospital in Spokane, Wash., on Tuesday, January 8. Word reaced Hawarden of her death through a letter from her sister, Mrs. E. H. Betts of Erie, PA, another early day resident of this place, to Miss Anna Smith.

Dr. and Mrs. Brower came to Calliope as a young married couple. He practiced medicine and operated a drug store there until Hawarden was in the making. They then moved to Hawarden but left here about 40 years ago. Mrs. Brouwer, who was in her late 80's, is survived by two sons, John of Spokane, with whom she made her home, and Fred who resides in Ohio; and a sister, Mrs. Betts of Erie, PA.

John never married. Fred had four children but one son was killed in World War II and the other son is still in the service. There are two girls in Fred's family.

Poster's note: The family first appears in Sioux County in the 1885 Iowa census. They were still there in 1900 when Mary's birthdate was given as May 1862 in Iowa; her husband, Dr. John H. Brower's birthdate was given as Nov. 1850 in Ohio. According to the 1900 census, they were married in 1882 and son John was born in December 1883 and Fred W. was born in December 1884.
