Loyal R. Martin

Loyal R. Martin, 88, of Cherokee died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his home following an extended illness. Services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Rev. Armand Bertrand and Rev. A.E. McCoy officiated. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, under the direction of the Greenwood Funeral Home. L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F. W. had graveside military rites.

Loyal was born June 20, 1912, in Granville, the son of Nicholas and Susan (Even) Martin. He graduated from high school in Alton. He then attended Creighton Univ. Law School in Omaha, Neb., graduating in 1934. In 1935, he was admitted to the Iowa Bar Assoc. On Oct. 11, 1940, he married Claudene Smith in Cherokee. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1998.

Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Following his military service he returned to Cherokee working initially with Claude Smith. In 1948, he opened his own legal practice as Loyal R. Martin, Attorney. He was the originator of the Cherokee County U.S. Army Reserves at the bequest of Sen. Guy Gillette. He served as Cherokee City Attorney from 1954-1964. Mr. Martin was past president of the Cherokee Rotary Club, past president of the Cherokee Country Club and club secretary from 1946-1969. He was a member of the V.F.W. and Knights of Columbus. Loyal was an excellent amateur golfer, having won the Sioux Valley Golf Tournament three times, retiring the Cowles-Allison trophy.

Survivors include a daughter Claudia Sue Ellis and her husband Ted "Chip," of Brewster, Mass.; a son, Mark Martin of Cherokee; and four grandchildren, Timothy and Jennifer Ellis and Nicholas and Michael Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Claudene.
