Sioux Center - Bertha Vander Lugt, 105, Sioux Center, died Sunday, April 7, at Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility.
Services were Thursday, April 11, at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church, with the Revs. Elliott Vander Lugt and Charles Louvau officiating. Burial was at Lebanon Cemetery, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Bertha Vander Lugt, daughter of Remko & Grada (Kastein) Kooi, was born June 14, 1896, in Garfield Township near Lebanon. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school. The Kooi's were charter members of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church located near their home.
She married Gerrit Vander Lugt on Jan. 27, 1921, at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church. They farmed near Lebanon. Mr. Vander Lugt died in 1968. She lived her entire life in the same section of land until becoming a resident of Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility in June, 1993.
Those who knew her often were amazed by her extremely sharp mind and her genuine interest in others' lives. She was a devoted member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church and voted in every federal election since the women's suffrage movement.
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Vander Stoep of Sioux Center, Grace & Severt Haverhals of Sioux Center, Lois & Tony Hooyer of Sioux Center, and Dorothy Bennett of Denver, CO; two sons, Ray & Esther Vander Lugt of Sioux Center, and Al & Annetta Vander Lugt of Grand Rapids, MI; 36 grandchildren 87 great grandchildren, and 13 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit Vander Lugt; an infant son, William Vander Lugt, a son-in-law, Andrew Vander Stoep; a great grandson, Grant Hooyer; three sisters, Gertie Haverhals, Draaka Haverhals and Jennie Haverhals, and six brothers, Ben Kooi, Fred Kooi, Pete Kooi, John Kooi, George Kooi and Ellis Kooi.
