Hawarden Independent, February 12, 1942 & Sioux Center News, February 12, 1942

Obit. from the Hawarden Independent gives more details.

Mrs. William Vander Lugt who resided in this community for a number of years, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Peter Daale, northeast of Hawarden, about 5 o'clock last Friday morning. Mrs. Vander Lugt had come to the home of Mrs. Daale from Colton, SD, about two weeks previously and about a week preceding her death, she suffered a stroke. She was bedfast but three days before she passed away.

Funeral services were held at the Daale home at 1 o'clock and at 2 o'clock at the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church, Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Wm. Reinsma in charge. Interment was made in the Lebanon Cemetery.

Grietje Van Santen was born in South Holland, Sept. 26, 1867, and so was past 74 years of age at the time of her death. She grew to young womanhood in Holland and was married to William Vander Lugt in June, 1893. To this union were born 11 children, the eldest of whom passed away in infancy.

In 1914 three of her sons, Gerrit, Leonard and Dick Vander Lugt, came to America and located in this vicinity. The following year their parents and the other seven children came to America to make their home. They located on a farm near Lebanon where they lived until 1919 when they came to Hawarden and for five years they lived on the E. Brunsting farm southeast of Hawarden. In 1926 they returned to the Lebanon vicinity and farmed for five years when they retired and moved to Sioux Center. Her husband passed away six years ago last November. Since the death of her husband she made her home with her children.

The children who survive her are Gerrit, Dick and Neal Vander Lugt, Mrs. John Kooi, Mrs. Peter Daale and Mrs. Adrian Dekkers of Hawarden; Leonard & Peter Vander Lugt of Chicago; Mrs. Walter Swier of Colton, SD, and Mrs. Gerrit Vander Lugt of Grand Rapids, Mich. She was the last member of a family of five children.

Mrs. Vander Lugt united with the Christian Reformed Church when she resided in Holland and remained true to her faith until the end. She was of a quiet and unassuming personality and the welfare of her family was her uppermost thought.

Out of town relatives who came for the funeral were Peter & Leonard Vander Lugt of Chicago and Mr. & Mrs. Walter Swier of Colton, SD. A number of old friends of the family from Rock Valley also were present.
