Sheldon-Rodney George Vanden Brink, 69, Sheldon, died Sunday, Dec. 18, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Services were Wednesday, Dec. 21, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Gordon Bloemendaal officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of Andringa Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Rodney Vanden Brink, son of Wynard & Marie (Kleinwolterink), Vanden Brink, was born Feb. 23, 1936 in Hospers, where he lived his youth and attended school.

He married Helen Bernice Jacobsma on Feb. 11, 1959. They lived in Sanborn until he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War for two years. He was honorably discharged.

They moved back to N'West Iowa, where he worked at many different jobs and then drove truck for over 30 years for many companies. He retired from Van Wyk Trucking in Sheldon.

He then worked part time for Prairie Queen Bakery in Sheldon, making doughnuts and delivering buns.

Mrs. Vanden Brink died June 22, 1989. He married Charlene Vogel of Sheldon on July 25, 1992, in Sheldon, where they lived. She died Nov. 19, 2004.

He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon and of the American Legion in Boyden. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, woodworking and gardening. He sold some of his fresh produce to local grocery stores. He especially enjoyed socializing with friends over coffee.

Survivors include four children, Kevin & Karen Vanden Brink of Orange City; Deeann & David Bylsma of Hull; Sharon & Kenneth Puhl of Chatsworth, and Alden & Michelle Vanden Brink of Hospers; three stepchildren, Marsha Wissink of Ames, Cindy & James Jenney of Argos, IN; and Michael & Ruth Vogel of Sheldon; 10 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Daryl & Marge Vanden Brink of Peoria, IL, and Galen & Mary Vanden Brink of Colorado, and three sisters, Eleanor Burkman of Sioux Falls, SD; Marilyn & Gerrit Vander Zwaag of Hull, and Phyllis Vanden Brink of Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Helen Vanden Brink and Charlene Vanden Brink; a grandson, Levi Klaassen and a sister Elmae.
