Hawarden Independent, July 13, 1911

Gys Ter Maaten, who arrived from Holland on the 15th day of June, died Saturday afternoon from sunstroke while working in the harvest field for Henry Schurmann, an Eagle Township farmer, residing a few miles northeast of Hawarden. Ter Maaten went to work for Mr. Schurmann the next day after his arrival from Holland. Saturday afternoon he was shocking barley and about three o'clock complained to his employer about feeling the heat and Mr. Schurmann had him go and lie down in the shade of a shock of grain. Mr. Schurmann continued with his harvesting and did not discover anything wrong. About four o'clock the children brought lunch to the field and were horrified to find Ter Maaten dead. Dr. Meyer was called and he pronounced heat prostration as the cause of death. The deceased was 25 years of age and leaves a mother, sister and brother in Holland. He had three cousins in this country, one at Sioux Center, one near Doon and one near Rock Valley, all of whom were present at the funeral. The funeral was held Monday at the Baptist church in this city, services being conducted in the Holland language by Rev. Heynen of Sanborn. Interment was made in the Hawarden cemetery.
