Sioux Center News, June 28, 1945

Mr. & Mrs. John Ter Haar received the sad message from the war department early Monday morning that their son Pfc. Gerrit had been killed in action on Okinawa on May 2. He was with the 77th division of the infantry, and was 19 years old.

Gerrit left for the service on Oct. 4, 1943 and received his training at Camp Fannin, Texas. After having completed his basic training he spent a weeks furlough at home in the latter part of February and then reported at Ford Ord, Calif., the early part of March from where he left for overseas service the early part of April.

He is survived by his parents, and five sisters, Johanna (Mrs. Harold Meendering) of Doon; Gertrude (Mrs. John Zomermaand) of Sioux Center, Christina of Glenwood and Wesselena and Bertha at home.

No immediate plans have been made for a memorial service, and the News joins their friends in extending its sincere sympathy to the family in the loss of their son and brother.
