MRS. HERMAN SCHOLTEN DIES JULY 1 AT FARM HOME - Born In County, She Recalled Great '88 Blizzard.
Mrs. Herman Scholten, a beloved resident of the Alton vicinity for many years, passed on at her home Thursday morning, July first.

Nellie Den Hartog was born March 19, 1880, near Middleburg, and had reached the age of 74 years, 3 months, and 12 days. July 9, 1903 she was married to Herman, Scholten, well known Alton farmer, who died Nov. 12, 1946.

Surviving are her seven children, namely Jeanette, Mrs. Ray Riedeman of Orange City; Minnie, Margaret, Gerald and John at home; Bemice, Mrs. Arie Jasper of Orange City; and Nelvina at home; also four stepchildren: Anna, Mrs. H. P. Langstraat of Sheldon; Abbie, Mrs. Evert Geurink, Orange City; Grace, Mrs. August De Boer, and Simon Scholten of Alton. 21 grandchildren; one sister: Mrs. G. H. Te Grootenhuis of Baldwin, Wisc.; 3 brothers: Walter and John of Hospers and Edward of Sanborn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 sisters and 4 -brothers, namely Maggie, Mrs. Solsma; Ann, Mrs. Riemersma; Ida, Mrs. Peter Vos; in March of this year by Mrs. Jane Slothouber of Alton; Dick, Herman, Dim[*?] and Jim. Mrs. Scholten was a life-long member of the local First Ref. church and a faithful member of the Ladies Aid Society,though not in good health for many years, she continued to be as active as possible and her passing was a real shock to her family and legion of friends. Her parents were pioneers and she remembered well the great blizzard of 1888, and often recalled the rigors of that severe winter.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 pm. at the First Reformed church, Alton Rev. E. Van Engelenhoven and Rev. L. Furda officiated. A Dutch Psalm, No. 88. Verse 10, was sung by the audience. It was a favorite of both, Mrs. Scholten and her husband. Mrs. Vernon Freriks sang "The Love of God” and "Sometime We'll Understand”. Mrs. Dick Te Brink was organist. Burial was in Nassau Township cemetery. Pallbearers were 6 nephews: Henry Slothouber, Alton, John Solsma and John Huygens, Hospers, Robert Den Hartog, Sheldon, Marion Den Hartog, Hospers, Richard Den Hartog, Primghar.

Present from a distance were Mrs. G. H. Te Grootenhuis, Baldwin, Wis.: Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Menning, Mr. and Mrs. John Menning, Mrs. Jake Achterhof, Miss Susie Menning, all of Edgerton, Minn.; Mrs. Rudolph Eernisse, Leota, Minn., besides many Alton friends and a number from neighboring towns.
