Ellis C. "Bug" De Bruin, 92, formerly of Hospers, died Saturday, May 23, 1998 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn. Services were held on Wednesday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema officiated. Burial was in Hospers Cemetery under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home.

Ellis was born Oct. 13, 1905 in Hospers, the son of John J. and Hattie (Hoeven) De Bruin. He graduated from Hospers High School in 1925. He married Winnie Wesselink on Aug. 23, 1929 in Sioux City. He worked as a mechanic for Verschoor Motor for 25 years. The next 11 years he was a mechanic for Floyd Valley School and also enjoyed working as a bus driver. Mr. De Bruin was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hospers where he made his profession of faith Dec. 25, 1926. He was also a member of the Hospers Volunteer Fire Department and the Hospers Public School Board of Education. In March, 1996 he moved to the Prairie View Home in Sanborn.

Survivors include his wife of Sheldon; three daughters and their husbands, Joyce and Don Adkins of Hospers, Marilyn and Herm Vander Maten of Tucson, Ariz., and Donna and Jed Nibbelink of Lancaster, Calif.; a sister, Eunice VerSteeg of Sheldon; two sisters-in-law, Marguerite De Bruin of Clinton and Margaret De Bruin of Sioux Center; six grandchildren, Paul Adkins, Scott Adkins, Mike Vander Maten, Kara Parrish, Wendy Snodgrass and Troy Nibbelink; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
