Ireton Woman Dies At Age 84

Funeral services for Mrs. William (Phoebe) Taylor, 84, of Ireton, who died Saturday [April 4] at St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City where she had been taken after a fall in her home March 28 when she broke her hip, were held at the Methodist church there at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rev. G. S. Bruland officiating. Interment was at Pleasant Hill cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral home. Mrs. Hal Shoemaker was the organist and accompanied Emery Stewart as soloist. Casket bearers were Kenneth Miller, R. S. Miller, jr., Stanley Yates, Don Hughes, Merle Yates and E. F. Goodmanson.

Phoebe Luella Miller was born February 15, 1880, at Hanover, Ill., a daughter of John Quincy and Mary Ann Miller. In 1884 she moved with her parents to a farm six miles northeast of Ireton. She married William Taylor on August 26, 1903. He died June 18, 1950. She was also preceded in death by a son, Wesley, June 21, 1912.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of the United Presbyterian church until it closed, later joining the Methodist church. She was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service in which she was presented with a life membership pin in 1962. She served as president of the Foreign Missionary society, superintendent of the primary department of the Sunday school for 15 years, and at the time of her death was a communion steward. In 1961 she presided as queen of the Ireton 75th Jubilee celebration.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. A. W. (Geraldine) Bartlett of Ireton; a son, Dr. Wendel Taylor of Sheffield, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jean Louise, William Maxwell and Richard Douglas Taylor, all of Sheffield; two brothers, Richard S. Miller of Ireton and Robert J. Miller of Iowa City, and a number of nieces and nephews.
