Jake Hoekstra.

Jake Hoekstra, age 91, of Orange City, died Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Orange City Municipal Nursing Home. Jake was born Aug. 6, 1899, in The Netherlands, the son of John Hoekstra and Martha De Jong Hoekstra. At the age of nine, he came to the United States with his family, and they settled at Orange City.

On Feb. 20, 1924 he married Tillie Nydam. They farmed near Orange City until 1960 when they retired into town. Mrs. Hoekstra died Feb. 16, 1981 at Orange City. In 1986 Mr. Hoekstra became a resident of the nursing home. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Orange City where he was a Sunday School teacher for several years. In earlier years he served on the council of the Protestant Reformed Church in Hull.

Survivors include his two sisters, Agnes Van Klompenburg of Orange City and Martha Gesink of Denver, Colo., a brother, Cornie, of Orange City, and nephews and nieces. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Tillie Nibbelink, Trace Brouwer and Alice Vander Meulen, and a brother, Rinse Koopmans.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the First Reformed Church of Orange City, with the Revs. Steven Vander Molen and Donald Van Klompenburg officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
