From the Hawarden Independent, June 1, 1939:

While John Vander Maaten of Orange City was registering his name on the visitors' book at the antique exhibit at the Tulip Festival there, he was stricken with a heart attack and collapsed. He was removed to a hospital where he passed away shortly after. Mr. Vander Maaten had long suffered from heart trouble and his wife admonished him about going to the celebration but he did not heed her warning, saying that he believed he would enjoy seeing the sights which ended in so tragic a manner.
