Funeral Held for Aged Orange City Woman Wednesday

Orange City -- Mrs. John Vander Maaten passed away at her home in O. C. Sunday at 3 o'clock in the morning after having suffered a stroke on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Vander Maaten had reached the advanced age of 85 years.

She was born in Gelderland, the Netherlands on Nov. 15, 1869 and at the age of 12 she came to America with her parents. She was married to Mr. Vander Maaten in 1891. He preceded her in death 15 years ago. The couple moved to a farm near Middleburg where they lived until 1930 when they moved to O.C.

Nine children were born, 7 of whom survive their mother. They are: Herman of Middleburg, Andrew of Newkirk, Lucy, Mrs. Henry Van't Hof of O. C., John of Edgerton, Minn., Gertie, Mrs. Arie Van Kley of Ashton, Alice, Mrs. Maron Van Peursem of Maurice and Jake of Fort Dodge. An infant daughter died many years ago and a son William, 24, passed on in 1930. Surviving besides the children are 30 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Vander Maaten was the youngest and the last living member of the pioneer Dries Hoeve family. Her sisters preceding her in death were: Mrs. Herman Harmelink of O. C., who passed away in 1926; Mrs. John Van Beek-Grotenhuis of O. C. in 1946; Mrs. Teunis Ver Hoeven of O. C., in 1952 and Mrs. Neal Van Beek of Sioux Center in 1911.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the First Ref. church of O. C., with Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment was made in the O. C. cemetery. The Van Etten Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Her husband's obituary (Sioux County Capital, May 25, 1939) gives her name as Allie Hoeve.
