Hawarden Independent, December 3, 1896

W. C. Walton was born in southeastern Ohio in 1853 or 1854 (note a death of an infant has information that he was born in 1853). When six years of age the family removed to Pana, Ill.; where his parents died. His mother was a sister of Mr. Wm. P. Cutler with whom our oldest settlers were very familiar, and who took a warm interest in the subject of this sketch. Mr. Walton received more than a common school training, fitting him through his natural ability for work as a teacher, in which he was quite successful. Part of his education was received at Jacksonville, Ill., and the rest at Wabash college, Crawfordsville, Ind. He spent some time in Nebraska, and came to Calliope some 17 or 18 years ago where he resided until his death.

For a number of years he was quite an active member of the Presbyterian church. In Feb. 1882 he married Miss Kate McKinnon, who with an infant child survives to mourn his departure. Six weeks since as was reported in these columns, he received a gun-shot wound, from the shock of which his nervous system seems never to have rallied, and he sank to rest on Friday, Nov. 27.

The funeral was conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. Gill from the Presbyterian church, after which the body was laid the side of an infant child, who died some years ago.
