Hull-Nelva Lois Vander Schaaf, 84, Hull, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Services were Monday, Jan. 20, at American Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Steven Bierly officiating. Burial was at Hope Cemetery in Hull, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Nelva Vander Schaaf, daughter of Dick A. & Ida C. (Bregman) De Koster, was born July 20, 1918, in Hull. She was raised in Hull, and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She then was a country school teacher. She married Gerrit J. "Sonny" Vander Schaaf on June 19, 1941, in Hull. During World War II, they lived in California, where she worked in a defense plant. After the war they made their home in Hull, where she was a homemaker and gave piano lessons. Mr. Vander Schaaf died June 24, 1992, in Sioux City.

She was a member of American Reformed Church in Hull, where she belonged to the Women's Guild. She also was involved in music at the church, serving as accompanist and organist. She enjoyed reading and sewing.

Survivors include four children, Robert Wayne Vander Schaaf of Hull; Richard Lee & Somjai Vander Schaaf of San Diego; Russell James & Bonnie Vander Schaaf, of Hull, and Ida & Ken Evertse of Hull; 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister, Adelaide Presly of Riverside, CA; and a brother-in-law, John Kooiker of Hull. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit J. "Sonny" Vander Schaaf; a great granddaughter, Miranda Jessie Warner; and two sisters, Jeanette Semmens and Esther Kooiker.
