Sioux Center News, November 4, 1998

Harriet Vander Schaaf, 91, of Sioux Center died on Friday, October 30, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital and Health Center. A memorial service was on Monday, November 2, at Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg, with the Rev. Stephen Breen officiating. Burial preceded the church service at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

Mrs. Vander Schaaf was born to Jake E. & Henrietta (Nyman) Vermeer on September 20, 1907, in Sioux Center. She graduated from eight grade from Sioux Center Christian School. She married John R. Vander Schaaf on April 24, 1929, in the bride's home in Sioux Center. She was a member of Free Grace Reformed Church and the women's guild. Harriet enjoyed crocheting and quilting for her family.

She is survived by six daughters and their husbands: Wilma & Gilbert Schelling of Orange City; Henrietta & John "Bud" Vander Broek of Sioux Center; June & Harold Driesen of Rock Valley; Audrey & Kenneth Van Grouw of Alton; Helen & Don Statema of Hospers, and Arlys & Edwin Zommermaand of Sioux Center; six sons and their wives, James & Betty of Orange City; Milton & Joan of Hardwick, Minnesota; Herlon & Joan of Rock Valley; Wayne & Sharon of Boyden; Delbert & Elda of Orange City, and Roger & Charlotte of Lake Wilson, Minnesota; 54 grandchildren; 92 great grandchildren; one sister, Johanna Vermeer of Sioux Center; and two brothers, Arnold Vermeer and Marvin Vermeer, both of Sioux Center. She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson (Brian); a great grandson (Kent), other grandchildren and great grandchildren in infancy and three brothers, Bert, Ed and Bill.

At the funeral service music was provided by Linda Breen, organist, and Evan & Sheryl Grotenhuis who sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "It Is Well With My Soul" The congregation sang "Trust and Obey" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus."

Casket bearers were James Vander Schaaf, Milton Vander Schaaf, Herlon Vander Schaaf, Wayne Vander Schaaf, Delbert Vander Schaaf and Roger Vander Schaaf.
