Richard S. Vander Schaaf, 90, of Rock Valley died Sunday, July 28, at his home.

Services were Thursday, August 1, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. C. Eric Fennema officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.

Vander Schaaf was born September 11, 1905, in Lebanon, the son of Simon & Tillie (Baron) Vander Schaaf. He attended grade school in a one room eight grades schoolhouse near Lebanon.

When he was in his 20s, he worked in factories manufacturing electrical and mechanical components in the Chicago area. He established a garage and general repair business in Colton, South Dakota, in the late 1920's which he owned and operated for more than 40 years, retiring in Rock Valley.

On June 12, 1935 he married Jean Vande Burgt in Lebanon.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James of Brunswick, Maine; a daughter and her husband, Millie & James Vande Burge of Highland, Indiana; three brothers, Sam of Rock Valley; John of Sioux Center, and Bert of Dolton, Illinois; a sister, Mary Helmers of Rock Valley; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Rock Valley Christian School.
