Sioux Center News, August 4, 1999

The remains of Leon Vander Schaaf, 62, of Viborg, South Dakota, formerly of Rock Valley, were found July 3 in the Bitterroot National Forest near Darby, Montana. He had been missing since November 1998. He had left alone on a hunting trip.

Memorial services were at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 31, at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Vander Schaaf was born June 29, 1937, in Sioux County, the son of Stuart & Nellie Vander Schaaf. He grew up in Northwest Iowa and attended school near Hudson. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He lived in the Rock Valley area where he drove truck for the Land O'Lakes Dairy before moving to Viborg. He retired from IBP of Sioux City.

He was an avid hunter and lover of the wilderness and mountains of Idaho and Montana.

Survivors include two sons, Greg of Hudson, South Dakota, and Lyle and his wife Medea of Alexandria, Virginia; two daughters, Lynette Vander Schaaf of Alexandria and Kara Vander Schaaf of Chicago, Illinois; one grandson; a brother and his wife, Duane & Jo Vander Schaaf of Rock Valley; a sister and her husband, Phyllis & George Good of Butler, New Jersey; and nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Earl and Russel Vander Schaaf.

Memorials in his name may be directed to the National Parks District of Montana.
